Johnson Space Center (JSC) and NASA contractors have tremendous impact on the State of Texas. Human Space Exploration and Development has been responsible for the development of many new technologies, and at the center of these innovations is Texas’s own JSC.
JSC's combined workforce in Bay Area Houston accounts for 16,844 jobs, and is made up of 3,076 civil employees and 13,768 NASA contractors. When the economic multiplier effect of these jobs is considered, the total impact from JSC on Houston and Texas exceeds more than 26,435 employees with personal incomes of more than $2.5 billion and total spending exceeds $3.5 billion.
The economic impact data supplied by NASA-JSC and University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Center for Economic Development & Research was compiled using a widely accepted impact methodology with official Bureau of Economic Analysis multipliers.
NASA-JSC has a dynamic and broad based impact on the economic, educational and quality of life on the entire State of Texas. NASA provides $72 million for grants and contracts to Texas universities and colleges, as well as $44 million to Texas non profit organizations.
