Overview of Aerospace in Bay Area Houston

The Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center (JSC) was established in 1961, and from the early Gemini, Apollo and Skylab projects to today's Space Shuttle, International Space Station and Constellation programs, JSC continues to lead NASA's efforts in human space exploration.

A few key elements of JSC:
  • JSC is home to the NASA astronaut corps and is responsible for training space explorers from the United States and its space station partner nations.

  • The Mission Control Center at Johnson Space Center directs all space shuttle missions, including international space station assembly flights. MCC also manages all activity onboard the international space station.

  • JSC is the lead center for space shuttle activities.

  • JSC serves as the lead NASA center for the International Space Station -- a U.S.-led collaborative effort of 16 nations, and the largest, most powerful, complex human facility to ever operate in space.

  • The Johnson Space Center is home to NASA’s Constellation Program.

  • JSC annually manages over $4.0 billion in federal aerospace contracts, which include a local payroll of over $1.9 billion annually.

  • JSC is home to approximately 17,000 employees; about 3,000 are civil employees while the remaining 14,000 work for over 50 aerospace contractors located in the area.

Aerospace Advocacy

Bay Area Houston is home to NASA Johnson Space Center and over 50 aerospace companies. In an effort to keep this important industry cluser vibrant, these contractors collaborate with the Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership (BAHEP) to work on a number of industry initiatives that are important to the vitality and over-all mission of NASA JSC: Aerospace Advisory Committee, Citizens for Space Exploration, Space Center Volunteers, Team NASA, The Young Professionals for Space Exploration.

Aerospace Advisory Committee

Comprised of top leaders in aerospace companies and other interested area industry leaders.

Mission: To promote continuing support and commitment to the space programs and space operations functions being implemented by NASA JSC. The AAC recommends and implements initiatives to support the interests of NASA JSC and the local aerospace community.
Purpose: To connect industry leaders to discuss activities in the aerospace community including political events, NASA contracts, future trends, etc. The committee occasionally invites speakers who have relevant information to impart to the group. AAC also supports the other aerospace committees at BAHEP via company participation and funding. Those include Team NASA, Space Center Volunteers, Citizens for Space Exploration, and The Young Professionals for Space Exploration.

Comprised of U.S. taxpayers: municipalities, educational institutions, corporations, professional and civic organizations, and private citizens.

Mission: To promote awareness of the benefits of human exploration of space. Through a multi-state effort, CSE networks with elected officials, community leaders, and corporate and individual contacts to ensure continued public and political support for America’s human space exploration.
Purpose: To advocate continuation of funding for human space operations and development each year, Citizens for Space Exploration has become a credible and reputable organization on Capitol Hill, having visited congressional offices numerous times since its inception to discuss the merits of human space exploration programs from the viewpoint of voting constituents across the U.S.

Space Center Volunteers

Contract and civil space industry employee volunteers

Mission: Working together in the community to promote the good will of the aerospace community.
Purpose: To join all civil and contract employees, families and friends of the Bay Area Houston aerospace community under one banner as we celebrate and demonstrate the generous spirit of our community.

Team NASA

Comprised of NASA, contractor and community representatives

Mission: To build a seamless partnership with JSC
Purpose: To enhance employee, contractor and community activities by providing coordinated planning, organization, communication and a process to review events to determine the overall value to all participants.

The Young Professionals for Space Exploration

Comprised of young professionals in the aerospace industry

Mission: To ensure adequate funding for NASA's programs as well as to make sure NASA's missions are inspiring enough to encourage future generations to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and math.
Purpose: To arouse awareness in the American public about the importance of human space flight so that they will contact their federal elected officials to express their desire to see a robust NASA. This is accomplished through the use of social media campaigns as well as online letter writing websites.
