The Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center (JSC) was established in 1961, and from the early Gemini, Apollo and Skylab projects to today's Space Shuttle, International Space Station and Constellation programs, JSC continues to lead NASA's efforts in human space exploration.
JSC is home to the NASA astronaut corps and is responsible for training space explorers from the United States and its space station partner nations.
The Mission Control Center at Johnson Space Center directs all space shuttle missions, including international space station assembly flights. MCC also manages all activity onboard the international space station.
JSC is the lead center for space shuttle activities.
JSC serves as the lead NASA center for the International Space Station -- a U.S.-led collaborative effort of 16 nations, and the largest, most powerful, complex human facility to ever operate in space.
The Johnson Space Center is home to NASA’s Constellation Program.
JSC annually manages over $4.0 billion in federal aerospace contracts, which include a local payroll of over $1.9 billion annually.
JSC is home to approximately 17,000 employees; about 3,000 are civil employees while the remaining 14,000 work for over 50 aerospace contractors located in the area.
Bay Area Houston is home to NASA Johnson Space Center and over 50 aerospace companies. In an effort to keep this important industry cluser vibrant, these contractors collaborate with the Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership (BAHEP) to work on a number of industry initiatives that are important to the vitality and over-all mission of NASA JSC: Aerospace Advisory Committee, Citizens for Space Exploration, Space Center Volunteers, Team NASA, The Young Professionals for Space Exploration.
