Healthcare and Life Sciences Industry

The Houston metropolitan region offers an impressive healthcare system that offers numerous options to meet routine as well as specialized patient needs. Houston's hospitals consistently rank among the nation's top institutions. In addition, the region boast’s one of the nation’s most active life science research and entrepreneurial communities.

The BAHEP region offers excellent healthcare facilities and opportunities. The research, education, and business environment that support quality healthcare is equally robust and well-established. The BAHEP and Houston metro area:
  • Boasts 160 biotechnology companies and academic partnerships through local consortia, involving BioHouston, the Houston Technology Center and local economic development organizations 
  • Includes over 75 exemplary hospitals and hospital systems, health clinics, and first-tier academic and research facilities. World-class research and development are currently taking place in every key biotech cluster: agricultural, biomedical, oncology, environmental, genomics, medical devices and nanotechnology
  • Records the 10th highest rating in the world for the number of patents by city. 
  • Includes the Baylor College of Medicine’s Human Genome Sequencing Center, a part of the Human Genome Project, which is the international consortium that completed the identification and order of 3 billion DNA letters that make up man’s 46 chromosomes.
  • Boasts the BioHouston Resource Center and Houston Technology Center to provide start-up companies access to expertise, funding, wet lab bench space, shared equipment, offices and other tools that emerging companies need.
  • Conducts leading-edge research at the Galveston National Laboratory at UT Medical Branch – Galveston. It is one of two National Bio-containment Laboratories constructed under grants awarded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease/National Institutes of Health (NIADH/NIH). Research at the lab focuses on therapies, vaccines, and diagnostic tests for naturally occurring emerging diseases.

Regional Overview

Bay Area Houston, which includes both Harris and Galveston counties, offers a complete spectrum of world-class healthcare services that are conveniently located.

Partners of the Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership are dedicated to providing patient care, research, and education services of the highest standards. Medical staff at each of BAHEP's full-service hospital members varies from 350 to 1,500 physicians and other healthcare providers, representing virtually every medical and surgical specialty. BAHEP’s partners also include schools of medicine, nursing, allied health sciences, chiropractic, and biomedical research.

A few facts about the region:
  • The 55-plus population in the region is rapidly growing; currently, it accounts for 20 percent of the population.
  • Location, location, location. The Bay Area Houston region is halfway between the Texas Medical Center and the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston.
  • A highly-skilled workforce is in place – 28 percent of the area's workforce has a college degree ranging from a bachelor's to a doctoral.
  • A medical service area population already exists.
  • The quality medical clusters in this region exude synergy!
  • Affordable land is available for new development.
  • The area is known for a relaxed, superior quality of life.
