SATOP — Technology Outreach

What is SATOP?

The Space Alliance Technology Outreach Program

The Space Alliance Technology Outreach Program (SATOP) is a NASA and State of Texas partnership that transfers the knowledge and technology of the U.S. Space Program to small businesses. Small business owners faced with a technical challenge can receive up to 40 hours of FREE assistance from a scientist or engineer. SATOP is administered by the Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership and is made possible through a consortium of industry partners called Alliance Partners, which include the NASA Johnson Space Center, aerospace companies, and colleges.  To date, the alliance partners have donated over 27,000 engineering hours.

SATOP Successes Promote Economic Growth

  • Solved more than 800 technical challenges in Texas
  • Created/retained more than 650 jobs
  • Infused more than $150 million into the Texas economy

Helping Texas’ Small Businesses

Since 1999, SATOP has helped small businesses across the state with technical solutions that small business owners themselves could not afford on their own.

Many of these small businesses have reported success from the assistance they received, in the form of increased sales, revenues, new jobs, and capital investment.

Who can apply?

Any U.S. based small business or manufacturer (under 500 employees).  Contact us for more information.

How does it work?

Submit a Request for Technical Assistance (RTA), and SATOP recruits an Alliance Partner engineer with the appropriate expertise and availability to develop a solution. The Alliance Partner engineer will provide up to 40 hours of free assistance.

• Manufacturing                 • Electronics

• Environmental                 • Chemical

• Industrial                        •  Materials

• Structural                       •  Acoustical

The project must appear solvable within the 40-hour limit. Requesting business must have a prototype, technical drawings, patent, or patent pending.
